Atheism has become synonymous with anti-Theism or the hate of religion. It isn’t so much that they are ambivalent to people of a spiritual persuasion, but are down-right hostile to faith. This is why it is important to hold Atheists accountable and to a standard of morality, because the natural tendency for them is to compulsively re-educate and gulag Christians. They all have a Stalin impulse to murder religious thought out of the human species. History has shown this to be true.
One of the arguments Christian apologists use when debating secularists is what is called the Moral Argument. The Moral Argument simply asks, “Where did human kind acquire our moral nature if not from God?” The answer Atheist usually gives, is our species over millions of years selected for morality as useful toward our survival. This is the typical counter we hear on the Moral Argument, but this counter sets up a paradox that is not easily escaped from by the Atheist.
The Atheist Paradox as I call it is this,
If through the process of natural selection we came to our moral reckoning as well as our spiritually inquisitive human nature, then for an atheist to limit and denigrate spiritual inquiry is to deny the very thing our species supposedly selected and worked towards as necessary to our very survival.
If evolution is true, then humankind selected for morality and a spiritual nature, so why the hate by the secular world? Shouldn’t they celebrate these qualities and embrace them seeing it took millions of years to get here? Truly, the hate for religion in these regards seems counter intuitive to our own development, and even illogical considering morality must be something we need as social creatures.
So obviously, the source of hate and animosity for people of faith stems from something else, perhaps the concept of accountability and morality itself is offensive to the average Atheist?
That Offensive Biblical Morality
The Bible says that a purely secular, naturalist worldview makes you His enemy. Why is this? Well the Apostle Paul addresses this in the Book of Romans.
“For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.” - Romans 8:5-7
He explains here that the worldly or carnal individual can in no way intuit the full reasoning and wisdom behind God and His laws.
The reason for this is because the worldly, or secular mind creates a hierarchy of priorities that is more beastly than divine in nature. Hoarding resources, living selfishly, preoccupation with sex, acquiring things and accomplishments, pleasure seeking are all hallmarks of the carnal worldview. A carnal mind is fixated on carnal things and the only morality it produces barely passes as socially acceptable.
In contrast, God’s Law demands things that are not naturally discerned but spiritually given, it is a standard far more rigid than the law of the jungle or survival of the fittest. It demands things of humankind that are not found in us by nature. Concepts like justice, discerning right and wrong, mercy, character, virtue, forgiveness, redemption, self-defense, jurisdiction, proper authority, just war, liberty principles, truth, etc are things we adhere too because it satisfies our sense of morality. The law of the jungle will never satisfy these demands and yet they are crucial, and the defining elements of human civility.
So, whether Atheists know it or not, if there is any noble characters found in humanity it isn’t because we discerned them from nature alone, but because God’s word has been permeating cultures across the Earth now for eons. It is this awareness of God and His Law that brings civility to man.
Most atheists and secularists obsess over finding fault in God’s Law and in the Bible and give little thought to its contributions to humanity. Fortunately there are some honest ones.
Just recently Lord of the Rings actor John Rhys-Davies at a Hollywood event made these statements concerning the contribution and benefits Christianity has had on humanity and Western Civilization.
"I count myself a rationalist and a skeptic, and I find myself constantly defending Christians and Christianity,” Rhys-Davies told The Christian Post while on the red carpet at the popular awards show that celebrates faith and family content.
“We seem to forget that Christian civilization has made the world a better place than it ever was,” he continued.
The U.K. native said one of Christianity's greatest “glories, was the abolition of slavery” but maintained that slavery still exists and it makes him mad.
“All the things that we value, the right of free speech, the right of the individual conscience, these evolved in first and second century Roman Christendom, where the individual Christian said, 'I have a right to believe, what I believe and not what the Emperor tells me.' From that our whole idea of democracy and the equality that we have has developed,” Rhys-Davies said.
"We owe Christianity the greatest debt of thanks that a generation can ever have and to slight it and to dismiss it as being irrelevant is the detritus of rather ill read minds, I think,” he added. (Christian Post, 1/242020)
He really does nail it here, and beautifully condemns the impulse in the average Atheist to ridicule the contributions of Christianity. It is to their own hurt, do they really want to dissuade people from finding reasons for people to be more just, more merciful, more loving, caring, forgiving, peaceful, etc? It is crazy to comprehend what society would look like if church and moral instruction ceased to exist. We would be right back to Monarchism and might makes right, the Law and whim of man would again rule. That is a horrible idea, and God forbid we embrace that curse ever again.
Conclusion
But herein lies the problem with the naturalist, secularist viewpoint, it places a glass ceiling on how far we are allowed to investigate and comprehend creation and our environment to the mere labeling of rocks and the numbering of material objects.
If we are just highly evolved animals why can’t we be satisfied like animals in the knowledge of our natural environment and nothing more? The fact is we can’t, humans fixate and obsesses over the spiritual implications of creation and we will never be satisfied with the limits on the thinking naturalism will have to offer because it refuses to address the implications of design. It is that very design implication that drives the average man to seek answers about the designer.
If by nature we as humans compulsively want to understand both the design and designer, why is the ruling class so intent on financially dictating a purely standard model, deep-time, naturalistic model of human development? The answer is because the greedy ruling class and financial interests want a base-class of slavish workers that will build anything without considering the moral implications of their work. It is the first step to making slaves. Strip a human being of profound thought and moral reasoning and you can get them to do anything without complaint.
Read my article, entitled The Real Reason the U.S. Gov Subsidizes Atheism for more insight into the state sponsored religion called secularism.
Atheists love to say that religion is a manmade instrument of slavery and control, but let’s be honest the worldview that asks you to limit your questions and squash inquiry into our spiritual nature is the real slavish perspective. How could anyone accept that? The spirit of man desires freedom of thought and creativity, exactly how God made us.
I say all of this because if you want insight into profound questions, do not turn to science or secularism seeing it financially rewards those who can seemingly lobotomize their very nature and soul with the promise of money and prestige. Ever seeking, but never answering fundamental questions like, "why are we here?", "And who created us?" Questions our human nature demands of us to answer.
Instead we should embrace the things that set us apart from the animals, God is looking at humanity and still sees this wicked nature in us and it grieves Him. We are compelled to a higher standard. In the Book of Isaiah speaking to the prophet, He says, Yes, I have made all these things, but He will only Bless those that humble themselves and seek out His higher standard and Law.
For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. Isaiah 66:2
Are we not better individuals, is not society better off when we embrace a higher standard of morality and law? Of course we are.
These Truth goes for nations and it goes for individuals, and ultimately finds its perfect completion in Jesus Christ. But if you can’t discern the spiritual things in the natural world, or the Word of God, how will you ever discern the spiritual truths found in Jesus? But that is what I hope and pray for the worldly-minded Atheists, that they begin to see the paradoxes in their own thinking, apply themselves to the study of God’s Word, and realize the need for a savior and redemption from their carnality and sin.
Everyone can go from a carnal man, to a Spiritual man when the Spirit of God begins working on their life.
